Several leaders and activists holding prominent positions in the Awami League’s district and city committees have taken over responsibilities within the organization, engaging in questionable activities. Buoyed by government support, some claim an ownership stake in the association, sparking significant resentment among the people of southern Bangladesh.
Seizing Public Property: Bishu Ghosh’s Land Dispute
At the heart of the controversy is an alleged land grab involving Bishu Ghosh, a respected businessman in Barisal. Though around forty percent of the land adjacent to the Barisal Diabetic Hospital belongs to Bishu Ghosh, certain questionable officials from the hospital reportedly seized it unlawfully. Despite repeated requests from Ghosh’s family for the land's return, there has been no resolution over the past sixteen years. Notably, the incident has scarcely received any coverage in local Barisal media.
Tax and Income Returns
For the 2022-23 fiscal year, tax documents filed with the Barisal City Corporation bear an individual’s name, yet the actual ownership lies with the Diabetic Association. Despite multiple legitimate bank accounts for transactions, the association allegedly filed income returns using personal checks, suggesting either a misuse of power or another agenda that is difficult to decipher.
A Crisis of Public Trust in Southern Bangladesh
While the Barisal Diabetic Hospital was established to serve the healthcare needs of the poorer population of southern Bangladesh, there are now allegations that it has become a vehicle for personal profit by the politically powerful.
